HENRY HOME AT 12:30 AM

Nasty cold East Wind

and cloudy.

Raining and sleet to-

night.

Henry and I went to see

Jen this A.M. She is in

bed now resting up in

preparation for an

operation in the near

future.

Henry went to G.R. on Right

of Way work.

A bunch of road men

were at Kaufman's playing

cards last night. Henry

home at 12:30.

Mrs. Claytor called this P.M.

and took by order for a

pair of every day shoes.

$9.22.

It may just be the way I read it, but it seems to me that Edna sometimes specifies things in her journal when she is amused, or alarmed, or maybe peeved. If she notes something that is rather ordinary, it comes without explanation.

In this entry, I think she may have been a bit peeved that Henry did not arrive home until 12:30 AM and that she may have been a bit shocked that a pair of every day shoes set her back $9.22.

HANK IN BED ALL DAY

Henry went to G.R. to

Road Comm meeting.

Finished ironing this P.M.

Hank in bed all day

but feeling better to-night.

Gave him lemon

juice real often.

Cold East Wind.

I am not quite certain if the flu remedy that Edna is giving Hank "real often" is lemon juice or some other sort of juice. I do know that on at least one occasion in my childhood I received a dose of honey and lemon juice that may or may not have also contained a bit off whiskey.

You don't have to have a cold to enjoy the benefits of a Hot Toddy. It is a great drink for sipping in the evening (or middle of the day) to warm up.

There are plenty of Hot Toddy recipes available via a quick internet search but for sake of ease and to complete this post, here's a link to a recipe for a classic Hot Toddy.
