It may just be the way I read it, but it seems to me that Edna sometimes specifies things in her journal when she is amused, or alarmed, or maybe peeved. If she notes something that is rather ordinary, it comes without explanation.
In this entry, I think she may have been a bit peeved that Henry did not arrive home until 12:30 AM and that she may have been a bit shocked that a pair of every day shoes set her back $9.22.
I am not quite certain if the flu remedy that Edna is giving Hank "real often" is lemon juice or some other sort of juice. I do know that on at least one occasion in my childhood I received a dose of honey and lemon juice that may or may not have also contained a bit off whiskey.
You don't have to have a cold to enjoy the benefits of a Hot Toddy. It is a great drink for sipping in the evening (or middle of the day) to warm up.
