EDNA WONDERS WHAT THE COMING YEAR HAS IN STORE

New Year's Day - And again
I am wondering what this
coming year has in store for
us. With the world in such
a turmoil, what will another
year bring forth. Germany and
Italy warring against Greece
and Great Britain and the
U.S. about to help England by
loaning her money, planes,
tanks, etc.
Fireside chat that Pres. Franklin
D. Roosevelt made to the people
of the U.S. has caused Hitler
and Italy very angry and
furious. Frances + Morse
went to G.R. at 12:30 and will leave for Jackson this P.M.
Jack, Lucille + Mary Elizabeth
here for New Year's dinner. Had
chicken, potatoes, (?), cabbage salad
frost cake, pumpkin pie, pickles, jam.
We last left Edna on New Year's Eve in 1936. While I have Edna's journals for 1937, 1938 and 1940, I wanted to jump ahead to 1941. We will get back to the other years. I promise.
When I first began to document my great grandmother's journal in this blog, I opted to start with 1936 because, like 2020, it was an election year.
Much like 2021, there was uncertainty and trepidation heading into 1941. So, we move ahead to 1941.
A few things have changed for Edna's family since 1936 including two new family members she mentions in this journal entry.
Frances and Mary Elizabeth.
Morse and Frances McCarty were married on New Year's Eve in 1936.
After losing two infants in 1931 and 1938, Lucille and her husband John adopt a baby girl, Mary Elizabeth, in 1939.
As Edna's notes, there is much turmoil in the world. There will be a lot to unpack as we read her journal from 1941 and as the U.S. enters into to World War II.
Hi Jill, Thanks so much for the fascinating look at history and also your reactions to the journal. I’m enjoying every day. What a treasure In those journals. Glad to hear you have several years so I can keep enjoying this.
