JEN COMES HOME. HENRY TAKES ILL.

Stormy, snowing most of

day. Henry and I

went to Hospital brought

Jen home. Henry sick

when we started and by

the time we got to Jen's

he was so sick we

called Dr. Wedel right

away. Gall attack first

one in 3 yrs. Had to

call Dr. again at 8 o'clock.

Dr. gave him a big

shot of morphine which

put him asleep immediately.

I am sleeping on

davenport at Jen's.

Lyd sleeping with Jen.

I am glad Jen is home. Jen's sister Lydia and Edna are staying with Jen to make sure she is well cared for now that she is no longer in the hospital. Henry was suffering from a gall attack which prompted two calls to the doctor and resulted in a "big dose of morphine." He is resting peacefully.

With Jen and Henry both stable, I was curious about Dr. Wedel. He must have lived nearby. He came to the farm to attend to Henry.

Ancestry.com is one of my favorite resources and today it did not disappoint. With a little bit of digging, I found Herbert S. Wedel and details of his amazing history.

Herbert Wedel's Draft Card

Dr. Wedel was educated at the University of Michigan and, according to his draft card and several other documents, he was born on April 3, 1896 in W. Africa.

Peter and Martha (Liebig) Wedel were Herbert's parents. Peter was an evangelist and missionary. Born in Russia in 1865, he immigrated to America with his family in 1874. As a young man, Peter studied at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Rochester, New York. From 1888-95 he evangelized for the Mennonite Brethren Church in Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Minnesota. After his marriage to Martha, Peter felt called to foreign missionary service, eventually landing in W. Africa. After two years, Peter was in declining health. On the voyage back he died and was buried at sea. Herbert was not yet one.

Martha and Herbert left Africa ahead of Peter. Martha made the journey home with her infant son in 1896. I am not sure how they departed Africa, but they traveled from England to the United States on a ship called Germanic, arriving in New York on July 30, 1896. Martha was 23. Herbert was just three months.

Germanic Passenger Log 1896

Martha eventually remarried and had two other children.

Read more about Peter and his history:

I didn't have much luck unearthing Herbert's history after his arrival back in America until he was a student at the University of Michigan. I am not sure how he ended up in the vicinity of Bowne Center but it seems he had a fairly successful career.

A December 7, 1961 article in the Battle Creek Inquirer details what was his final post as a medical professional, director of the Thornapple Valley Home and Medical Care Facility. Prior to that, he served as chair for the Barry County Cancer Society and received a special citation for serving 15 years as a medical advisor to the Barry County Draft Board without compensation.

Henry was in good hands.

Dr. Wedel died in 1965. He is buried in Hastings, Michigan.

off the wall" birthday

card.

and her group entertained

had roast beef + etc.

Had a nice meeting.

Henry went to G.R. (bowling

night) to-night, but on

account of icy roads

came back home.

Alice + I went to Lucille's

to-night.

Hank working on his

book keeping to-night.

Jack, Lucille and Mary Watts

It's Jack's birthday. Jack is married to Enda's daughter Lucille.

I had a conversation with my dad (he's 90) trying to figure out what Edna meant by "off the wall" card. Was she just remarking on the fact that she purchased a manufactured greeting card? By "off the wall" did she mean it was a funny card? Something else?

Dad said that Jack sometimes had a cantankerous sort of humor. He recalled a time he helped Jack plow the fields. It was a particularly difficult job because the ground was hard and the plow wasn't breaking up the ground easily. When he was finished, Jack looked over the job and told dad something to the effect of "It looks like a kid was playing in the sandbox." Dad said Jack was trying to be funny while still letting him know he wasn't overly impressed with the results.

Dad and I decided Edna may have enjoyed giving Jack a card that poked a little fun.

Happy 117th birthday, Jack!

EDNA BUYS A DRESS (WITH FRINGE)

Beautiful sunny day

but very snappy atmosphere.

Soo Mich is the coldest

spot in the U.S. 2º below

by official report (radio).

I went to G.R. with

Henry. Did a little

shopping this A.M. Had

hair cut, shampoo +

wave $1.25 at Robin's Salon.

Also purchased (blue, black +

gray fringed) crepe dress

at Siegel's $2.00 and hand

bag $5.00. Went to hospital at

2:20 to see Jen. Found her sitting

in chair. Dr. Thompson told

her she could go home in a

couple of days.

Eric Johnson finished buzzing

wood. Alice got dinner for

men.

Edna has been shopping for a dress. On the first of the month she returned a dress she purchased from Wurzburgs because she didn't like the material. On this day, she buys a dress (with fringe) from Siegel's.

Siegel's on Monroe Street in downtown Grand Rapids

Edna doesn't strike me as the fringe-wearing type and she may have been equally surprised by her choice of fringe as she calls it out in parentheses. She seems to do that when she wants to emphasize something.

Her choice of a crepe dress with fringe makes me think there is a special occasion on the horizon. She is a rather practical woman who wouldn't purchase a fancy dress without good reason.

Jen is coming home soon. She has had a rather long stay at the hospital. This is good news for Edna and Henry. That will be short lived. Shortly after Jen arrives home, another family member will have a lengthy stay in the hospital.

1941 is off to a rough start for Edna and her family. The worse is yet to come. By the end of the year, the United States will be engaged in a world war.

I hope Edna gets to put that fancy dress to use.
