EDNA GETS A BOX OF CHOCOLATE

Valentine's Day. Not so cold.

Helen accompanied Red to Lansing

with a load of creamery Butter.

Henry went to G.R.

Received box of choc candy for

Valentine's gift from Helen's friend

she also rep'd a box too.

Alice and I sewed. I'm making

Shirley a couple of slips.

The egg buyer didn't come to-day.

Rec'd $5.00 from Bob's on milk bill.

I wonder if "Helen's friend" is Red. Helen did accompany him to Lansing for the day so it would stand to reason that perhaps he picked her up at the farm and delivered chocolates to both Edna and Helen.

The Whitman's Sampler advertisement included in this post is from 1936. The sampler box look pretty much the same today. That says something about how strong that branding is given that Whitman's have been sold several times since the 1960's. The brand is currently owned by Russell Stover.

Whitman's is one of the oldest brands of boxed chocolates, begun in Philadelphia by Stephen Whitman in 1842.

The Sampler was created in 1912. The stitching design of the box resembles needlework samplers while the inside of the box contained a sampling of chocolate, thus the double entendre product name.

There is no way to know for certain if Edna's box of chocolate was a Whitman's Sampler or if it was Red who gave it to her. But Valentine's Day brings out the romantic in me so in my mind, I imagine both are so.
