EDNA IS STIRRED BY SPEECH CRITICIZING ROOSEVELT ADMINISTRATION

Very, very cold. Zero all day.

Henry went to G.R. Clare

went with him.

Did Sat[urday]s work washing windows,

wood work, stair steps.

Morse went to Lowell to-night.

Listened to a stirring speech by

Al Smith - criticizing Roosevelt

administration. Much truth in what

he said.

Roosevelt and Smith in friendlier times

One of the most prominent members of the American Liberty League was Al Smith (1873–1944), formerly governor of New York and the Democratic Party’s candidate for president in 1928. On this day in January 1936, he gave an address at a meeting of the organization at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. In it he accused President Roosevelt of ignoring the party platform of 1932 and flirting with a dangerous, un-American ideology.

That evening Mr. Smith announced that he would not be supporting Roosevelt in the 1936 election as he had done in 1932.

Edna also chooses not support Roosevelt in 1936. Perhaps she had already made up her mind, or perhaps Mr. Smith swayed her decision.

Both Edna and Smith were in the minority. In November of 1936, Roosevelt went on to win the greatest electoral landslide since the beginning of the current two-party system in the 1850s, carrying all but 8 electoral votes and every state except Maine and Vermont.
