A CHILLY DAY CALLS FOR A FIRE IN THE FURNACE

Very chilly cold gloomy.

Wind from N.E. - Fire in

furnace to-day first this fall.

Henry went to G.R. Vera Watts

went along to spend the day

with her sister.

I mended all day.

It was October 13 in 1936 before the Johnsons needed to use their furnace for the first time. In 2020, I had to turn on my furnace to take the chill off much earlier in the month,

I am assuming that Edna and Henry may have had an oil burning furnace simply because I recall reading in another journal entry about oil heat in the basement.

I would love some heating and cooling experts to chime in. What were heating systems like in the 1930s? The picture shows a coal burning furnace in circa 1930.
