Gov. Landon Rep[ublican] candidate for
Pres. in Grand Rapids to-night.
It was in January when Edna first made note of the presidential race of 1936 saying she was stirred by a speech Landon gave. Now, the election is just around the corner and in the coming days she will share some of her emotions leading up to Election Day and after. Her candidate is Landon and FDR, as we all know, will be re-elected.
On this day in 1936, both Landon and FDR were making the rounds in the midwest. FDR was in St. Louis and Chicago and would be in Michigan making stops in Grand Rapids, Lansing, Flint, Pontiac, and Detroit. Landon, who was the guest of Henry Ford the evening of the 13th, would speak to a large crowd at Navin Field (home of the Detroit Tigers) before heading to Lansing and ending the day in Grand Rapids.

Let's talk about Miss Benson a bit. She would have been the teacher at Bowne Center, which was a one room school. My father attended that school in the 30's and 40's. The school served that community until the 1960s when a larger school was erected in Alto bringing all the students from the greater area together.
I love that Miss Benson took the 7th and 8th graders to Lowell on a field trip. I don't know why, but I didn't really think field trips were a thing "back in the day."
I found the article (left) highlighting the week's events at The Strand theater in Lowell. The film stars Kay Francis as Florence Nightingale. Miss Benson was exposing the kids to little arts and culture and history.
I am pretty certain I would have loved being in her class.

I couldn't end this blog post with out mentioning honey pickled pears. I sure would love to taste Edna's recipe.
I was able to find a recipe for pickled pears to share with all of you. This recipe does not include honey but what's the harm in adding a bit?
