EDNA SERVES AS JANITOR, HOSTESS, AND IS ELECTED SECRETARY

ree

Warmer to-day — Nice day.

Made tomato mince-meat

8 qts.

Went to L.A.S. Hall to-night

to the Home Economics Extension

meeting of township.

About 50 in attendance from

the several townships of Cascade,

Lowell, Caledonia + Bowne.

Mrs. Cecil Croniger elected chair-

man and I was elected sec.

Excellent talk by Mrs. Japser of G.R.

on 'Mexico.' Lunch.

I built fire put on lights. Had to

fill positions of janitor and

hostess. I was only one there

from this neighborhood.

They pd. $1.00 for use of Hall.

Henry went to G.R. to-day.

Let's start with tomato mincemeat. I have been trying to find recipes for things Edna makes. I don't have her original recipes but I am still thinking that an Edna-inspired cookbook may be possible somewhere down the road.

I found a recipe on The Spruce Eats for Green Tomato Mincemeat.

"This old-fashioned green tomato mincemeat recipe combines the flavors of green tomatoes, spices, candied peels, raisins, apples, currants, and spices. It's perfect for canning and storing."

If you want to give the recipe a try: https://www.thespruceeats.com/green-tomato-mincemeat-3057088 And, please...if you do, come back to the blog post and leave a comment with the details.

There is so much to love about Edna and her experience at the Home Economics Extension.

First, she was elected secretary. In my estimation this is a pretty big freaking deal. This isn't just for Bowne Center where everyone knows her ...this is for a large group combining several townships. She plays it pretty cool. "Mrs. Cecil Croniger elected chair-

man and I was elected sec." But, I am guessing she was a bit (albeit humbly so) pleased.

I think, however, she may have been more proud of the fact that she played the parts of both "janitor and hostess" for fifty people ...none of whom seemed to be from Bowne Center. That's some female empowerment in 1936. I mean, we don't even know Mrs. Cecil Croniger's first name and she was elected chair!!!

Edna had it all under control on this night in 1936. I am inspired.

I am glad Edna kept a journal. I am beyond thankful we still have her journals. Because of them, every single day I fall a little more in love with my great grandmother, whom I never met.

Start keeping journals, people. They matter!
